While Arusha National Park may not host large elephant herds or any lions, it is still home to elusive predators like leopards and spotted hyenas, often seen during the quiet hours of early morning and late afternoon. At these times, the skies frequently clear to unveil the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, just 50 km (30 miles) away. Despite Kilimanjaro’s fame, it is Mount Meru—Kilimanjaro’s lesser-known neighbour—that dominates the park’s skyline. Standing at 4,566 metres (14,990 feet), Mount Meru is the fifth-highest peak in Africa and a spectacular hiking destination with rewarding panoramic views.
The climb up Mount Meru offers a varied and beautiful journey through distinct ecological zones. The trail begins in a wooded savannah teeming with buffaloes and giraffes, then ascends into lush montane forests decorated with red-hot pokers and Spanish moss. As you gain altitude, open heathlands emerge, dotted with giant lobelias and everlasting flowers in the alpine desert. Klipspringers delicately leap along rocky outcrops, guiding you toward the summit. At the top, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise view of Mount Kilimanjaro, glowing softly on the eastern horizon—a magical moment to cherish forever.
Arusha National Park covers an area of 552 square kilometres (212 square miles) in northern Tanzania, northeast of Arusha town. Its compact size makes it perfect for short visits without compromising on scenic variety. From montane forests and lakes to volcanic craters and alpine peaks, the park offers a striking diversity of landscapes. Though small, it’s a true gem for nature lovers and adventurers. Its proximity to major towns and airports makes it an ideal addition to any northern Tanzania safari circuit, either as a warm-up or a wind-down destination.
Reaching Arusha National Park is easy and convenient—just a 40-minute drive from Arusha town and around 60 km (35 miles) from Kilimanjaro International Airport. The park is well-suited for short excursions, with highlights like the lakes, Ngurdoto Crater, and lush forest all accessible in a half-day trip. Whether you’re starting or ending a northern safari, this park is a refreshing and scenic stop. Note that mountain climbing permits within the park are valid for a maximum of 12 hours, which is important for those planning a single-day ascent or forest trek.
Visitors to Arusha National Park can enjoy a wide range of activities beyond wildlife viewing. Forest walks and scenic picnics are popular, and birdwatching is excellent due to the park’s varied habitats. For adventurous travellers, the three- to four-day climb up Mount Meru is a major draw and serves as excellent acclimatisation before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro. Canoeing on Momella Lakes and visiting waterfalls are also available with a guide. Whether you’re looking for a gentle nature walk or a challenging hike, Arusha National Park has something for everyone.
If you’re planning to climb Mount Meru, the best time is between June and February, though you might encounter short rains in November. For the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro, visit between December and February, when the skies are most likely to be cloud-free at dawn. Wildlife is active year-round, but mornings and late afternoons are best for predator sightings. Regardless of when you go, Arusha National Park offers a refreshing blend of adventure, tranquillity, and natural beauty, making it a rewarding stop on any Tanzanian safari.
The park offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different travel styles and budgets. Inside the park, you’ll find two lodges, two rest houses, several campsites, and two mountain huts for trekkers climbing Mount Meru. Outside the park, especially around Usa River and in Arusha town, a wider range of hotels, hostels, and safari lodges are available. Whether you’re looking for comfort, adventure, or something in between, Arusha National Park provides excellent lodging facilities to complement your safari or hiking experience.

We went on a safari with Shengzna Adventure at the end of August and beginning of September, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Stanley is the best guide we could have hoped for. He always took our feedback into account, shared lots of fascinating information about the animals and nature, and his passion for his job is evident, which adds to the incredible experience! Thankfully, he was there to spot every hidden lion in the savannah with just one glance! I highly recommend this and suggest you request Stanley for an unforgettable safari experience! Always in a good mood and ready with solutions! See you soon, and thanks again to the team! Elayn Sammon2024-08-17Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an incredible safari with Shengena. From start to finish, their communication was excellent. What really impressed us was their flexibility - when we requested last-minute changes to our itinerary, they accommodated us without any fuss. The highlight of our trip was our guide, Stanley. His knowledge of the wildlife and landscape was impressive, and he went above and beyond to ensure we had the best possible viewing experiences. Stanley's expertise meant we always seemed to be in the perfect spot to observe the animals. For the price we paid, the value was outstanding. We saw everything we hoped for and more, thanks to Stanley's skill and dedication. If you're looking for an affordable safari that doesn't compromise on quality, I highly recommend this company. Overall, a five-star experience that exceeded our expectations! Andrea Ranuzzi2024-08-15Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our recent 10-day Safari and Zanzibar trip with Shengena Adventures, managed by Mike, was a major disappointment. While we did see the Big Five, several issues severely marred the experience: Poor Communication: There were significant communication breakdowns between the tour manager and our guide. On two separate occasions, we were left waiting for hours due to miscommunication, wasting valuable game drive time. Substandard Vehicle: The jeep provided was in terrible condition, lacking air conditioning, with frequent breakdowns, and was extremely uncomfortable due to bad suspensions. By the end of the safari, the dashboard was falling apart, making the experience unpleasant. Mismanaged Transfers: Our transfer to Zanzibar was poorly planned, leaving us wasting an entire day at a hotel instead of enjoying the beach due to a late flight booking. Failed Engagement Surprise: I had arranged a special bush lunch for my engagement, but it was a disaster. What was promised—a beautiful setup with champagne—turned out to be a cheap, poorly executed setup with alcohol-free grape juice. Despite paying extra, the experience was far below expectations, though I eventually received a refund after several complaints. See photo comparison on what was promised and what we received. Overall, Shengena Adventures failed to deliver the quality experience we paid for. I wouldn’t recommend this company to anyone, as there are many other options that would likely offer a better experience. 😊 Alexandra P.2023-10-09Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I started communicating with Mike and Boris from Shengena to plan an 8-day safari a few weeks before arrivals and they were very reactive and accommodating. On D day, our very knowledgeable guide-driver Godwin came to pick us up at our hotel in Arusha on time and we started our journey with Tarangire and then visited Lake Natron, northern and central Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara. We were very lucky and saw many animals, including lions, cheetahs and leopards, adults and cubs. Thank you guys for giving us such a wonderful time! Eve Desroches2023-10-05Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Gert Versteeg2023-08-24Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Together with my gf we had a chance to have 2 safaris in Kenya before reaching out to Shengena Adventure. I can say it loud: those guys are great! The company is being run by 2 young and super friendly people, who yet have a lot of experience in organizing safaris. Before the trip, they were always super responsive and were patiently replying to thousands of questions we had. Apart from organizing everything we wanted, they also put us to the right track when we wanted to do something in a wrong way (e.g. to big distances between the parks, location for great migration, etc.). The jeep we were having was operating flawless and the guide was super knowledgeable - knew all the answers, knew where to find animals and had couple of good stories to tell :) The lodges they've organized for us were breathtaking... beautiful views, great standard and great food. What else can I say? I can definitely recommend Shengena! What we got for the money was way above the expectations :)
